Using scarification, both the Karo and the Bumi ladies of Ethiopia adorned themselves, usually on the stomach, as signs of beauty. Some designs would be abstract lines. Others were figures of animals or insects. They use a knife to cut the skin, and then they rub soot and ash in the wound to irritate the flesh. This immediately raises a welt. It must be very painful to do. As the wound heals, a tough piece of skin develops over the scar tissue. In my opinion, it's actually quite attractive.
