STORY LINES

Art leads an interesting life that weaves many interests and experiences into a singular experience. He may be the most well-traveled person on the planet. He devotes time and energy to an array of causes and organizations, works as a painter as well as a photographer, produces an astonishing number of new images, television content, and publications, and possesses a limitless supply of stories and anecdotes.

Art’s Luck: He is ridiculously lucky. Art arrived at Peninsula Valdez in Argentina to shoot Orca beaching themselves to catch seal pups the very day the whales arrived. Other film crews had waited for weeks.

A Dangerous Occupation: He’s been charged by rhinos while on foot, chased by elephants, harassed by bears, menaced by soldiers, flown in rickety planes landing on jungle strips.

Digital in the Field: Once we suffered with large bags of film, worrying about heat and X-rays. Now we tote computers, hard drives, and chargers, worrying about corrupt cards and electrical surges. And….

The Making of "Travels to the Edge": Art’s public television show requires a tight team of professionals willing to endure the travails of travel to the wild corners of the world. Tedium, misadventure, and exalted moments occur in equal measure.

Art Wolfe at Home: Art’s home on a hill above Puget Sound in Seattle is a virtual museum full of artifacts collected in his travels. He has created an Asian-themed garden featuring flowing water and tall stones.

Mission-based Photography: The people of the world need to know what they have to lose. Art looks for any opportunity to contribute to building awareness of the wild world to help create a consensus for preservation.

Nature and the Artistic Vision: Art goes through phases: tight wildlife portraits, abstracts, blurs, choreographed cultural shots, black and white. He mines each approach until reasonably satisfied before moving to a fresh approach.

The Creative Process in the Wild: Art draws many of his compositions before leaving home. Then, he places himself in situations where his vision can be realized, or he stage-manages local people, which emphasizes a graphic element resident in their lives.

Following Your Dreams: Art strongly believes in pursuing things that enrich his life even if the road ahead looks improbable or difficult. He always looks for the next new thing, embarking on a career in television at an age that prompts others to consider retirement. Now he dreams of starting a foundation to support the causes he cares about.
