The goal of the workshop is to help participants become keenly aware of seeing - specifically, seeing precisely what is in their own images. That process begins with an initial critique of each participant's best work, and continues through the week with daily critiques and shooting assignments designed to hone photographic skills, intuitive self-trust, and the ability to think in terms of pure color.
Color, light, and gesture are the themes of this workshop. Jay will inform and challenge participants with an active schedule of assignments and reviews. He will illustrate his lectures with slide shows of his work. This is not a lecture class only. Questioning is encouraged. No subject is taboo. Jay's energy and knowledge of photography, make his class a most demanding and rewarding experience. The workshop begins with a critique of each of the participant's ten best images. The purpose of this initial review points to the crux of the workshop: to make the participants keenly aware of seeing figure-ground relationships.
Bring your 10 best 35mm slides or digital files, your cameras, lenses, a tripod, a loupe to edit with and lots of film or flash cards. Students are also welcome to shoot digitally as long as they provide their own means to view the images that they take; i.e. laptop. Try to get some sleep the week before you come to class because you won't get much in this week. Come prepared to have a good time. If you don't enjoy shooting, the whole thing is pointless.
